These pictures are taken in the Maldives. As a popular tourist area a lot of garbage is generated by the resorts and hotels and the local government have created an artificial island called Tilafushi to house the mountains of waste.

4

Thilafushi, located just a few miles west of the Maldivian capital of Malé. Environmentalists say that more than 330 tonnes of rubbish is brought to Thilafushi a day, most of which comes from Malé.

5

In December 2011 the Malé City Council temporarily banned the transporting of waste to Thilafushi because of a surge in waste floating in the island's lagoon and drifting out to sea.

6

In a BBC report in May 2012, the floating island of waste was described as "apocalyptic".

What I'm shocked at is the amount of recyclables. Moreover, those bottles will never really break down. There's literally tons.

Piss poor waste management.

Somebody actually dumped a boat there? Then also somebody scuba dived in that mess to take a picture from below?

with a pop. of just over 300.000 and a yearly tourist invasion of 700.000+ it's pretty obvious who creates all this waste. especially the plastic bottles!!
