These pictures are taken in the Maldives. As a popular tourist area a lot of garbage is generated by the resorts and hotels and the local government have created an artificial island called Tilafushi to house the mountains of waste.
Thilafushi, located just a few miles west of the Maldivian capital of Malé. Environmentalists say that more than 330 tonnes of rubbish is brought to Thilafushi a day, most of which comes from Malé.
In December 2011 the Malé City Council temporarily banned the transporting of waste to Thilafushi because of a surge in waste floating in the island's lagoon and drifting out to sea.
In a BBC report in May 2012, the floating island of waste was described as "apocalyptic".
Piss poor waste management.
