On Saturday night at around 8 pm, a would-be robber in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil tried to steal a phone from a woman using a cardboard gun. What he didn’t know was that the “helpless” woman was actually UFC star Polyana Viana, and the only thing this piece of shit got that night was a bloody face and an ambulance ride.
According to Viana, she was standing outside her apartment complex waiting for an Uber when a man approached and asked for the time. The next thing she knew, he was demanding her phone while reaching for what he said was a gun, but that didn’t seem to faze the MMA fighter. Without hesitation, she threw two punches and a kick right to his teeth, then locked him up in a chokehold.
Now scared shitless, the thief realized the imminent fury that would be raining down on him and begged Viana to call the police.
Viana told her side of the story the following day in an interview with MMAjunkie.
“When he saw I saw him, he sat next to me. He asked me the time, I said it, and I saw he wasn’t going to leave. So I already moved to put my cell phone in my waist. And then he said, ‘Give me the phone. Don’t try to react, because I’m armed.’ Then he put his hand over (a gun), but I realized it was too soft.”
“He was really close to me. So I thought, ‘If it’s a gun, he won’t have time to draw it.’ So I stood up. I threw two punches and a kick. He fell, then I caught him in a rear-naked choke. Then I sat him down in the same place we were before and said, ‘Now we’ll wait for the police.'”
She didn’t find out until after that the “gun” was actually just a piece of cardboard.
The man, if that’s what you want to call him, was later taken to a hospital to treat his injuries before being booked at the police station on attempted robbery charges.
As for Viana, she was totally fine, and actually remained calm during the whole situation.
“I was fine,” she said. “I was fine because he didn’t even react after. Since he took the punches very quickly, I think he was scared. So he didn’t react anymore. He told me to let him go, like ‘I just asked for the time.’ I said, ‘Asked for the time my ass,’ because he saw I was very angry. I said I wouldn’t let go and that I was going to call the police. He said, ‘Call the police, then’ because he was scared I was going to beat him up more.”
UFC President Dana White seemed to enjoy the news, and shared this post on his Instagram.
It turns out this wasn’t the first time the 26-year-old fighter experienced something like this either. A few years back, while living in Belém, two men on a motorcycle also tried to steal her phone, and that incident ended very much like this one, in a flurry of punches.
Polyana Viana is 10-2 in her professional MMA career, going 1-1 since joining the UFC in 2018.
Karma’s a real bitch, ain’t it buddy…
