Galaxy mergers can occur when two or more galaxies collide. They are the most violent type of galaxy interaction and definitely the most beautiful as for me.

I am particularly fascinated by the unit of time indicated in the pictures - Gyr, i.e. one billion years. The entire series of pictures span three billion years!

(No, they are NOT "real photographs", but computer simulations. No astronomer has been awake every night for the last three billon years making such phtoographs through his telescope....)
