A Paradise That Became a Ghost Town (31 pics)

This is what is left of Gagra, a resort city on the Black Sea coast.

With its climate close to subtropical, Gagra was a popular health resort in Imperial and Soviet Russia among Russian elite. It was a paradise with its pleasant climate, a royal palace and a number of buildings in an eclectic variety of styles from around Europe. The park that surrounded the resort was also very popular with tropical trees and even parrots and monkeys imported to give it an exotic feel.

But the war between Abkhazia (political entity within Georgia which status is disputed) and Georgia in 1992-1993 deserted the place making it all ruins and a ghost town.

How sad. Such a beautiful place even in a state of ruin. It must have been breath-taking once.

gagra was part of the rep. of georgia until russia and abkhazia until took this land from this country by war! thay killed thousands of innocent people (native georgians) and thousands became refugees! it truly was a paradise when it was part of georgia and became a ghost town after war and after it was made the part of russian empire! but one day the whole region of abkhazia will part of GEORGIA again and then it will be built again more beautiful and more prosperous then it ever was!

I was there right after war. It was scary. Holes from the bullets, armor on most cars. But the nature was in its origins. It is my favorite resort.
