Out of 50 women only three of them are actually looking at the camera. Some put the camera in front of their face thinking that will fix it but then you can't see their face duh. I am guessing the three that did it right, somebody told them about it. I was smart enough at the age of 12 to figure out you have to look at the camera to make it look like you're looking at the camera even if it's in the mirror.
Miranda, yes, you are right. Most of them are not looking at the camera but in their smartphone. Maybe it is just a means of style? Looking at classical paintings like those of e.g. Rembrandt lead me to the impression, that sometimes looking to the viewer is better, sometimes not. Perhaps there is no rule for how to do it? :-)
Occam's razor, which is more likely, they are trying to emulate classical paintings, or don't know how angles work. I know it is scary to think they are that ignorant, but probably true.
Why make up some macho psychiatric crap? It's far simpler than that. They are looking at their phones so they can see the pose, and not miss tapping the "Snap" button. Many millions of people around the world do the same thing, even when it isn't some sexy woman taking photos for your pleasure.

Grow up.
